Meet My Framer

Most of my frames are made by furniture craftsman Jens Sehm in Ashland, OR. He was born in the Ore Mountain region of the (former) East Germany.  The region is famous for its hand-carved wooden smoking men, light angels, and pyramids.  Steeped in this heritage of fine woodwork and high-quality German craftsmanship, Jens grew up whittling, carving, and doing carpentry.

In 1989 Jens moved to the States where got a degree in Construction Management at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and worked for years in the Bay Area.  After moving to Ashland in 2001, he decided to focus full time on fine woodwork, and in particular, furniture making. For many years Jens continued my woodworking studies at James Krenov’s woodworking program at the College of the Redwoods, now The Krenov School, in Fort Bragg, California. Jens works out of his shop in Ashland, Oregon where he enjoys helping clients realize their furniture dreams by creating lasting heirloom pieces sourced mainly from local and sustainable sources. I am very pleased that Jens makes frames for my paintings in between his beautiful custom furniture projects.

Look at this tidy wood shop!

What I love about working with Jens on the frames is they have the right mix of humble and craft. They’re beautiful and simple. I have a strong blue collar vein in my bones and art, and I want my work to be presented in exactly this way - with integrity and a strong attachment to craft and materials.
