Meet Your Meat: Vanitas For Smithfields

The first six months of 2012 were spent in the company of animal carcasses for the purpose of creating this series of paintings for Smithfields Restaurant and Bar located in Ashland, Oregon.  Neil Clooney, the “Cook – Owner” of the restaurant, and Dee Valentyne, General Manager both hail from the UK.  Smithfields Restaurant is their creation, named after a London meat market with a very long history, going back to the middle ages where it was the place of public executions, becoming a livestock market, and is currently a wholesale meat market today.  The larger paintings explore the classic vanitas themes of the brevity of life in the context of an animal’s life – basically when you eat meat, an animal has to die, so pay attention.  The smaller pieces are just ingredients for a tasty meal.
